What is 710 and Why Are People So Stoked on It?

Here’s the 411 on everything 710 and how to celebrate.

If you’re reading this, you probably know a little something about cannabis, 420, and other colloquial terms used to refer to the reefer. But what you may not know is that 710 is a way to refer to the consumption of cannabis concentrates, like shatter, wax, and oil. It’s the word “OIL” upside down, which looks like 710, hence the association.

People use this term to refer to the concentrates themselves as well as the act of consuming them. So, you might guess that, like April 20th (4/20), July 10th has become a ubiquitous holiday among concentrate consumers in the cannabis community. And, of course, the day has been nicknamed “Dab Day,” so now when you hear someone say “dabbing 710”, you know they mean it literally!

What are Cannabis Concentrates?

Concentrates are products extracted to isolate cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant. You can get them in all kinds of forms, including oils, waxes, shatter, budder, rosin, and more. Cannabis oils are highly potent and usually contain more cannabinoids than traditional dried flowers.

No matter the form, one thing remains true: cannabis concentrates always pack a powerful punch! Stoners love concentrates because they’re potent and quick to kick in. However, it can be very intense, especially if you’re a newbie or have a low tolerance. It’s important to start slow and take your time to figure out the proper dosage for you. Always start with a small amount and work your way up until you find the right balance. So, take it slow and enjoy the experience. For instance, if you’re using a dab rig, you can start by using a single grain of rice-sized dab and wait for the effects to kick in before taking another. But don’t forget to savor the flavor because no matter how small, it will still be a dab of deliciousness.

Types of Cannabis Concentrates

There are a lot of types of cannabis concentrates, each made differently. That’s like the difference between different types of wines, made from other types of grapes and processed differently, resulting in different flavors and effects. Here are some common types:

Hash

As one of the oldest forms of cannabis concentrate, hash is made by collecting and compressing the trichomes into a solid block. The texture of hash can vary significantly, ranging from dry and crumbly to sticky and pliable, depending on the amount of potency required. Hash is usually smoked or vaporized, although it can also be eaten or added to food for consumption. It is also used to make edibles, tinctures, and topicals. Hash has a longer-lasting, more concentrated effect than other forms of cannabis.

Kief

Kief refers to the trichomes, which have been sifted or mechanically separated from the cannabis plant. It is typically a fine, powdery substance that contains concentrated cannabinoids and terpenes. Knif is generally sprinkled on top of flower or works well for infusions.

Shatter

As the name suggests, shatter is a concentrate with a brittle texture and a glass-like appearance. It is produced through solvent-based extraction methods, such as butane or propane, which creates a translucent, amber-colored concentrate with a high level of cannabinoids.

Wax and Budder

A wax or budder is a cannabis concentrate with a soft, buttery consistency made using the same extraction method as shatter, but they are forced to be agitated during the purging process, which causes them to introduce more air into the concentrate, allowing them to become more malleable.

Live Resin

In order to preserve the terpenes and other volatile compounds contained in freshly harvested cannabis plants, live resin is flash-frozen. It is then processed using solvents to extract the concentrated cannabinoids and terpenes. In most cases, live resin has a robust aroma and flavor profile due to its high terpene content, which makes it extremely powerful.

Rosin

The term rosin refers to a solventless cannabis concentrate that is made by pressing a cannabis flower or hash and causing the resinous trichomes to become trapped inside the oil, resulting in a sticky sap-like substance that contains cannabinoids and terpenes
